St. Peters Basilica
Drawing - Graphite On Paper
2009, graphite on paper, 11.25Ē x 15Ē
St. Peterís Basilica, Vatican, Rome, Italy. Gian Lorenzo Berniniís Baldachin located over the Papal Altar and Saint Peterís Tomb. Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII about 1624, Bernini worked from 1624 to 1633 to complete this bronze memorial under Michelangeloís Dome. At over 90 feet in height the pavilion looks small at the center of the vast Basilica transept. The bronze that Bernini cast was reported to have been stripped from the inside of the Pantheon dome, but by Pope Urbanís account that bronze was used to cast cannons, and the pavilionís bronze came from Venice.
