Statue of Paolo Sarpi (Fra Sarpi, Fra Paolo) (1552-1623) in front of the church of Santa Fosca, Venice. Paolo Sarpi was a brilliant Venetian scholar and scientist. One of his notable achievements was the discovery that the iris contracted. His chief literary work was the History of the Council of Trent (1619), which he wrote after becoming involved in a dispute between the Venetian government and the Inquisition over the prohibition of a book.
