This is the lower half of a fully functional grist mill. All the gearing is made of wood. Grease keeps it moist and moving smooth. One real advantage using wood is - you can fix it easily. You don't need a foundry, just pull a peg and replace the tooth. Typically a gear is made out of wood like this anyway, a cast is made and they pour metal into that.
