Description
Steins, New Mexico is a ghost town near the New Mexico/Arizona border just off I-10. Originally a stage stop in the 1850s, it also became a railroad and mining town. The town's original name was Doubtful Canyon, named for a nearby mountain pass. That pass had been named for the frequent Apache Indian attacks which happened there. The name Steins was adopted in 1873 to honor a Calvary officer who was killed in such an attack. At its peak in 1919, the town and surrounding area had about 1,000 people, but the population dropped to zero in the 1940s when mining operations ceased. It is a private property today with only the owners as residents. Best viewed large. Social media sharing always appreciated.
