Tarnier specialised in the care of premature infants, and greatly advanced the fields of perinatology and neonatology while working at the Paris Maternity Hospital. In 1880, he designed the first incubator for premature babies, reportedly after seeing an incubator for hen's eggs at Paris Zoo.
