Drawing - Pencil - Graphite Illustration
A vine finds a tree. Creeping, twisting, entwining, it grabs for more and more, blanketing and killing it. Another hard fight for life shielded from our eyes by time. Walled in by the frame rates we can perceive, much of the world around us sneak by undetected.
Like a vine on a tree, there are some tangible displays of this disparity, but none crystallize it so well as this site we regard as 'the Ambush'. A unique display of life forms heretofore unknown and alien to our world, locked in mortal competition for survival. A mother and it's young have the misfortune of straying into the reaches of a predator. Breaking apart the surrounding solid ground, it distracts the adult with threatening gestures as it ensnares the young, attempting to pull it away.
Aside from the basic spectacle of this heated battle between mammoth, singularly unique beings, their seemingly frozen nature takes it to a whole other level. First records of their existence go back 367 years. Originally it was surmised that they were some type of mummified remains or different kind of fossils. Further studies proved that these individuals are indeed alive, yet not any known species of plant or animal. They more closely resembled a fungus on a fundamental level, with differences enough to avoid fitting too neatly into just that classification. To date, no other examples of these creatures have been found anywhere else.
Working with photographs and, to some extent, selected drawings and paintings from the period before the invention of photography, the movements of these players have been revealed. Calculated back from the first photos, it's estimated the frame of time they exist in is 1 second of theirs equals approximately 4 years for us.
For all of that time, we still know relatively little about them. We do know that they are coated with a pungent toxin that is quite effective at preventing any interference in their affairs by the surrounding vegetation or other animals. Including us. Declared a natural treasure, they are protected by many international laws. Regardless, samples have been occasionally removed (with great difficulty) for study, but thus far little new information has been gleaned. There are no obvious signs of their origin or how long they've been traveling. Other than what's visibly evident, occasional seismic rumblings and cracking can be heard and felt as the solid ground is broken apart by the aggressor into swamp.
The other big mystery is if they are aware of our presence at all, especially considering the daily masses that come to witness this fight. Some want to conduct experiments to see if reactions can be extracted from them. For now, though, the consensus is to maintain the same policy applied to our other natural wonders - one of non-interference and passive observation.
