Stuttgart By Night
Painting - Oil On Canvas
this is an original oil painting on canvas, 30x40 cm.
"Dieser Berg nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg aufgetuermt aus den Truemmern der Stadt steht den Opfern zum Gedaechtnis den Lebenden zur Mahnung. "
This piece was originally meant to be a day landscape. Memories of Immanuel Kant's "Beobachtungen ueber das Gefuehl des Schoenen und Erhabenen" made it a night landscape. The atmosphere of the painting is meant to express the desolation of and the oppressive feeling of war ruins, with emphasis on the ruined part of probably ancient building that almost acts as top of the Birkenkopf. This is the highest hill in Stuttgart (Germany) and it is sadly known for growing resulted of around 40 meters in height, due to the 15 million cubic meters of rubble resulting from the bombings that destroyed 45% of the city. Thus, the title of this piece: the hill in literally made of the ruins of Stuttgart, and standing on the top of the hill is, in a way, stepping on the old city.
