Painting - Oil On Canvas
This rather large oil painting on canvas is one of a series of paintings (I have been enamored with this form since I started painting) of an edited old family photograph. I begin with a black and white photograph and try to edit it down the absolute essence of the meaning and then start painting. I envision the colors and textures that are not immediately evident in the old photos and let my imagination work. In this work, there are two young girls, leaning against a warm brick wall, likely on their way to or from school, grandma's house, the playground or some other warm and magincal spot, in their frocks and shoes. I think the splashy warm 'frame' helps this painting along. It was quite a challenge to paint brick and still have it look soft and childlike. The shoes are my favorite part of the painting. The original of this went to my beloved cousin Katherine and her husband Dave upon the occasion of the birth and adoption of their first child.
Words I typically use to describe my work include: timi johnson, alaska, painter, oil painting, still life, study, grey, white, black, ochre, yellow, gold, shoes, figures, girls, children, students, leather, feet, cold, winter sun, dress, socks, skirt, people, study, old, antique, retro, two, blue, shadows, brick, brick wall, happy, peaceful, warm
