Tarantula chelicerae, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The chelicerae (lower centre) are two single segment appendages that are located just below the eyes and directly forward of the mouth. They contain the venom glands that vent through the fangs (not seen). The fangs are used to inject venom into prey such as insects, frogs and mice, and also to masticate (chew).
