Description
The Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum in Wytheville, Virginia, honors Route 21, the old main route from Ohio to Florida. This former gas station, built in 1926, houses memorabilia from the early 1900s and exhibits that tell the story of Route 21 and Interstate 77. Starting out as a Texaco station, the station transitioned to the Esso brand in the mid 30s. Candy and other snacks were added later. The vintage gas pumps are from a pre-electric era and were gravity fed. The clear sight-glass demonstrated the clarity of the gasoline. Luckily the Texaco pumps are not among the rarest collectibles.
