Description
Human genome research. Technician loading samples into automated DNA sequencers used for the Human Genome Project. The Human Genome Project aims to find the base sequence of all the genes in human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is the molecule which controls the growth and development of all organisms. In humans, it consists of around 3 billion pairs of bases, making up over 100,000 genes. Genes are lengths of DNA which perform specific tasks within an organism. When complete, the human genome map will allow for improved drug design and a greater understanding of genetic diseases. Photographed at the Sanger Centre in Cambridge, England.
