It is refreshing to come to Zhujiajiao from Shanghai. While Shanghai is going through urbanization at incredible speed, it is a relief to find a small village, not so far from the ever-growing megalopolis, that fits the image of serene, Old China.
Zhujiajiao - a town with over 1,000 years of history, features rivers, bridges, old streets and gardens. Small rivers crisscross with 36 old bridges on them.
Over 1,000 houses first built in Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) stand along both sides of nine narrow streets.
I hope new waves of change will be kept at bay from an ancient village like Zhu jia jiao. As they say, "once the water is out of the bucket, it's hard to pour it back."
