Raccoons live throughout the state of Tennessee and is the official state mammal. Generally, raccoons are nocturnal, but can occasionally be seen during the day. They often make dens in hollow trees as they are great climbers. Because they are also great swimmers they usually live near the water and trees and do most of their foraging near or in the waterways.
Raccoons are carnivores with a distinctive black face mask; their average size is 12 to 30 pounds. They typically eat fruit, nuts, frogs, insects, grains, crawfish, bird eggs, mice, and berries.
