The Astronaut's Book Of Hours - The Space Shuttle
Painting - Hand Painted Digital Art
This painting is inspired by an illustration from a medieval Book of Hours prayer book known as the Tres Riches Heures (The Very Rich Hours).
In my version, the arches enclose icons representing things which service the International Space Station - an astronaut in an EVA suit and a Progress supply ship, floating in space among gold stars. The ISS, backlit by the rays of the sun, is depicted in the center arch. Below, the medieval castle has been replaced by a Space Shuttle and service structure at the launch pad. The nobility of the space program - the astronauts - are depicted in a blue flightsuit and orange launch suits. Attending them are technicians clad in white room apparel, who traditionally help prepare astronauts for a launch.
The Space Shuttle program, like life in a medieval village, has now become a thing of the past. Like the medieval towns and castles of the past, the Kennedy Space Center still exists but is evolving into a new kind of launch facility. With this painting I wished not only to pay an homage to a style of artwork I have admired all my life, but to draw a comparison between the contemporary illustrations of medieval life in its heyday and my contemporary depiction of life at The Cape as it revolved around the current peak of our space technology.
"Hand painted digital art" is a term used by Marilynn Flynn to describe her unique style of digital painting. Her digital works are original paintings created on a computer - but not by a computer. Unlike some digital painters who use automated rendering programs, she applies each brush stroke by hand using a digital pen, tablet and natural media painting software.
