Description
This painting was painted from a photograph taken by my son back in February 2013. He thought it would make a nice subject and I had to agree. What attracted be to the picture was the beautiful colours in the brickwork of the bridge and the strong shadows, stretching from one side to the other. The bridge crosses over what was once the Hatfield to Dunstable line, opened by the Hertford, Luton & Dunstable Railway on September 1st 1860. It was taken over by the Great Northern Railway the following year. This bridge lies between Wheathampstead and Ayot and this stretch of the route has become part of the Ayot Greenway. Trains used this route for over 100 years before it was closed in 1965 following the report by Doctor Beeching which saw to the closure of a third of Britain's railway network. I was intrigued by the way the ground sloped down across one side of the bridge. Apparently, it was intended to double the track one day so to avoid disruption to traffic, the bridges were built to allow for the other track. Sadly, there was no more track, only less.
