Description
The Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia represents the nation's oldest extent craft guild, founded in 1724. It members represented the city's most gifted, and well connected, architects & builders in the city. The Carpenters' Company oversaw construction of many of the city's most notable historic buildings, including Independence Hall, Carpenters Hall, City Tavern, Christ Church and Old Swede Church.
The tile work represented in this image welcomes visitors to historic Carpenters Hall--site of the First Continental Congress. It is the perfect wall art for architect, structural engineer, building contractor, carpenter, history buff or native Philadelphian.
Today, approximately 150 women and men--all prominent architects, contractors or structural engineers--continue the 300-year tradition of the Carpenters' Company. The Company's total membership since 1724 stands at almost 900. Innovation in design and technical achievement in construction marks the work of Company members from 1724 to the present.
