Description
The Empress props herself up against a tree in the shade near a hayfield, keeping watch over her unborn kits.
The Empress is, in every respect, the mother figure of the Tarot. Upright, she is kind, generous, and far more than willing to nurture her young. By the same token when reversed, she can be demanding or overprotective. Though the symbol of Venus, the Empress' astrological attribution, is set in silver on her tiara, the mythological attributes of the Empress lean closer to Demeter, the Greek goddess of grain and fertility. As opposed to the Magician, who is about the conception of ideas, the Empress is about bringing those ideas into fruition; making dreams a reality.
Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) generally mate in late winter or early spring. The vixen remains pregnant for about 50 days thereafter before giving birth to 3 to 6 kits. Sometimes a litter can contain as many as a dozen young foxes.
