Description:
Ancient carving on the corner of St. Mark's near the "Paper Door" of the Doge's Palace in Venice. Nobody really knows who they are, but they are generally referred to as "The Four Tetrarchs," or the four coregents of the Roman Empire after it broke up. They are thought to have been carved in 4th century Egypt. The carved columns in the background are thought to have been carved in 12th century Syria, and were put there to commemorate victory over Genoa in a battle.
