Painting - Oil On Canvas
THERE WILL BE NO WATERMARKS ON PURCHASED ART WORK.This painting was inspired by my love and fascination with ravens and horses. They both have interesting and unique relationships with their environment. The ravens intelligence, playfulness and role in ancient creation stories provided the basis for its place as the gatekeeper to the garden containing the knowledge of good and evil.
The painting began with an idea that came to me in the wee hours of the morning. I immediately made a sketch of it and the next day sketched it in on the canvas with a thin mixture of yellow ochre and mineral spirits. I only placed enough information on the canvas to give me an idea of where I was going and proceeded from there with lean mixtures of paint and medium (stand oil and mineral spirits) employing the alla prima method. I gradually built up the layers using thicker and fatter mixtures of paint with the final layers consisting mainly of paint thinned with a 4:1 mixture of poppy seed oil and mineral spirits which created a thin glaze to enhance the shapes and colors.
The horse, raven and their surroundings are entirely from my imagination. The equine anatomy in particular required a great deal of research but it was well worth the effort. My goal was to produce a work that merges and reflects my knowledge of the methods and artwork of the High Renaissance with contemporary techniques.
