Description
Sighting of the ghost ship "Mary Celeste" 14 Dec 1872 Celeste by the "Dei Gratia" midway between the Azores and Portugal. The captan and crew could see no one aboard the Celeste and sent 1st. Mate Oliver Deveau to inspect the drifting ship. Deveau's team reported the ship was fully provisioned and perfectly seaworthy. The rigging evidenced she had encountered heavy seas and sails were torn yet, she was mysteriously abandoned.
The Mary Celeste left New York, for Genoa, Italy on 5 November with 1709 barrels of grain alcohol. The Dei Gratia followed them a week later bound for the same port. The Celeste had on board the captain his wife and daughter and a crew of seven.
There was no sign of foul play but it appeared the crew had abandoned the ship hurridly. There is much speculation, even today, on their ultimate fate.
