Description
The Seattle Great Wheel is a giant Ferris wheel at Pier 57 on Elliott Bay in Seattle, Washington. With an overall height of 175 feet (53.3 m), it was the tallest Ferris wheel on the West Coast of the United States when it opened on June 29, 2012.
The rectangular forms of textured bronze in Waterfront Fountain provide a geometric framework for cascades of water to tumble across and down into a wide basin below. Designed by James FitzGerald, its completion was carried out after his death by his wife Margaret Tomkins, a noted Northwest painter. With a structured appearance reminiscent of the minimalist aesthetic of the late '60s and early '70s, the fountain forms the centerpiece of Waterfront Park, a common area that includes piers 57 through 59 and offers beautiful views of the Seattle skyline, Puget Sound and the Olympics.
