The Green Monster
Painting - Oil On Masonite
In this painting I used elements of Fenway to create a composition that almost becomes the monster itself. The media boxes and the bleachers are warped to create a folding, almost vacuum affect in the stands. This warping coupled with the use of the complementary colours, green and red, force our eyes to fight for focus, and manufacture a very unsettling feeling. The grass flops out like a tongue, which slides out into our field of vision. This flip is cut and enhanced by the tunnel, which travels underneath the field. This tunnel is the area behind the green wall where people still operate this manual scoreboard. This architectural space signifies the dark unknown areas behind the scenes which make the game what it is. In the top, is the wall, the monster. The giant green fence uses vertical lines, which mimic those found in the bleachers and the hallway, to unite the image. In the middle of the panel is the shape of a plate. It contains a cubist form which points to the influence their work has had on my compositions. In this, my first painting of the series, I tried to add elements to show how the stadium starts out with a dream, in this case tee-ball, and the desert like setting are supposed to represent the countless number of dreams that are left to rest without being realized.
