Description
This painting was commissioned by a collector of my art and depicts, from top, left to right, the converted trawler Alatok, buoy tender Storis, icebreaker Eastwind and (with sails removed) the wooden hulled former survey ship, Northland. These are some of the vessels assigned to the Greenland Patrol which was formed after an U. S. Navy Destroyer was sunk by a German U-Boat. The task of the Greenland Patrol was to protect allied shipping from German attack and to prevent German occupation of Greenland. Units of the Greenland Patrol destroyed a weather station captured its German Crew, classified documents and destroyed its sophisticated weather and transmitting equipment. The Eastwind captured the Nazi Navy Auxiliary vessel Externsteine and its crew. The Greenland Patrol were the first American or allied military force to take enemy prisoners and the only American force to capture a German Surface vessel during WWII. These combat operations took place before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
