Description
The Guardian
The Avro Vulcan, mainstay of the UK input to the Cold War deterrent policy, saw service with the RAF from 1956 until 1984. Designed to operate at heights above that of the 1950s contemporary fighters and with a range in excess of 3,000 miles the Vulcan was pre-eminent in carrying out the deterrent policy. As the missile threat to bomber aircraft developed the Vulcan changed form the original high level strike sortie to that of low level penentration, again proving its worth in a new role far from its original design concept.
A superior design, elegant, attractive and very efficient, the Vulcan can still be seen in the air at UK airshows. A dedicated group of enthusiasts struggled for years to restore one to flying status - the result can be seen in the accompanying composite image.
