The Lady Prays
Photograph - Digital Photography
Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Lady prays with a blue sky backdrop. A statue of the Virgin Mary was unveiled at Our Lady of Guadalupe church in Santa Fe, New Mexico in August 2008.
Catholics from Northern New Mexico made the journey from Mexico City with a 12 foot-tall, 4,000 pound statue of the Patron Saint of the Americas. Mexican sculptor Dona Georgina Farias created the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The statue was placed in front of the Santuario de Guadalupe, the oldest church in the United States honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe. The journey to New Mexico followed the Camino Real, the historic route taken from Mexico City to the northern territory of New Mexico by early Spanish settlers. The statue made its journey from Mexico City to Santa Fe, stopping in Zacatecas, Durango, Chihuahua, El Paso (where it was temporarily detained by customs) and Rio Rancho along the way.
The sculpture is 12-feet high on the altar. There are vases for daily offerings of flowers, an intention box for prayers, and the inlaid bronze Holy Rosary Walk in the pavement surrounding the statue. Our Lady's Feast Day is December 12.
Everywhere you look in Santa Fe, she is there. Her likeness emblazoned on T-shirts, key chains, earrings, aprons, nightlights, posters, murals, tiles, pillows, magnets and more. She is the ubiquitous Our Lady of Guadalupe, an incontrovertible icon of Santa Fe and, perhaps, the entire Southwest.
