THE LOWER ROOM, 1992, oil on canvas, 82.in X 68.17 inches.
*The lower room serves as a rest ground for the dispossessed, a four-wall chamber accessed via two side rails seen in the central lower foreground of the scene. Paint is applied thickly to a linen canvas. Colors are opaque; modeling is achieved with manipulated knife and heavy brush. Crutches, ropes, wheelchair, a ladder in search of an exit, walls with no open windows, floor and ceiling that grip like clamps, these are the props that restrict, push down these survivors to the depths of the human condition. Figures are locked into a lower room, this, a dropping ground for the forgotten.
