The Milky Way 2
Photograph - Photograph
A 168 sec. exposure of our galaxy, the cloudy swath between the trees. It is 100,000+ light years across. Put differently, if we could travel at the speed of light, about eight times around the earth per second, it would take us 100,000 years to cross it. It is an average size galaxy and contains 200-400 billion stars, of which we can see about 2,500 with the naked eye. There are over 100 billion galaxies in the universe. I light painted the tree during the exposure. Note: the star trails are caused by the rotation of the earth.
