Description:

Before these women began their meticulous back breaking mission of planting rice seedlings in the paddy, the mud dikes with interlocking channels of water were released to flood the fields. The swamped ground was plowed into a smooth sloppy mixture with the help of oxen powered ploughs.
Planting rice in paddies is a labor intensive job. The 7 inch seedlings will take 3 to 4 months before harvesting providing the rice survives the usual adversities. The hectares of rice cultivated by villagers in developing countries are sometimes grown as cash crops to be marketed in nearby regions. Asia produces more than 75% of the world's rice while African nations produce less than 4% collectively. Of the 540 million tons of rice produced annually, only 5% is traded internationally. No other food crop is depended on by more people, and yet there is still a serious shortage of rice to feed some parts of the world.
