The Rising Sun
Digital Art - Digital Art,mixed Media
This image started as a watercolor on watercolor paper to make a texture, but as it developed I put the textured watercolor I painted on the computer and started to paint with digital watercolors. This was done on July 4th. I was thinking about the lives of the Prescott Hotshots firefighters lost in the Yarnell fire, and those of our military, policemen, first responders, those in the tornadoes we have had and those that have struggled through some rough times, losing homes and lives. There is healing that comes, through our prayers and our God. Let the warmth of the sun and the beauty of creation in this image and what you see in it and all around us in nature bring peace.
At 5:36 p.m. MST (23:36 UTC) on June 28, 2013, lightning ignited a wildfire near Yarnell, Arizona, a town of approximately 700 residents about eighty miles northwest of Phoenix. Strong winds in the area, reaching more than 22 mph (35 km/h), quickly whipped up the flames and pushed it out of control on June 30, growing from 300 acres (120 ha) to over 2,000 acres (810 ha) that day. A long-term drought affecting the area also contributed to the fire's rapid spread and erratic behavior, as did temperatures of 101 F (38 C). As of June 30, at least 2,000 acres (810 ha) were burned and the fire was completely uncontrolled. It was on this day, June 30, it overran and killed nineteen firefighters with the Prescott Fire Department's interagency Granite Mountain Hotshots.
As of July 1, 2013, the fire had grown to over 8,300 acres (3,360 ha). The nearby community of Peeples Valley was evacuated. The fire was still completely uncontrolled, with more than 400 firefighters on the line. As of July 2, 2013, it was reported that the fire was eight percent contained and that the fire had not grown in the past 24 hours. Full containment was estimated for July 12, 2013.
