Photograph taken using HDR, overlooking Princes Street Gardens. The shot is taken looking towards the Balmoral Hotel, with it's clock tower and the Scott Monument. The Scott Monument is the largest monument to a writer in the world. It commemorates Sir Walter Scott. There are 287 steps to the top of the Scott Monument and it is over 61 metres high (200ft). The monument was designed by George Meikle Kemp 1795 - 1844, inspired by the architecture of Melrose Abbey and Roslin Chapel. Princes Street Gardens was originally marshland, then James the III had it filled in with water to create the Nor Loch. This offered greater defence to Edinburgh Castle.
