Description
In the 1780s a number of American native bands along the US side of the Great Lakes decided to relocate to the British side and where given tracts of land along what is now the Grand River in Southwestern Ontario. This painting depicts a probable scenario from Tutela Heights, of what could have taken place in this area once called Eagle's Nest now Eagle Place, part of Brantford, once Brant's Ford, (of the river) named after Joseph Brant the native leader. The last remnants of Butler's Rangers, a mixed group of native and whites fighting for the British, where coming back from the Detroit area to Niagara-on-the-Lake to be disbanded and would have to cross the river, probably knowing that this territory was to be given as compensation to the loyal native nations for helping to win what is now Canada for England.
