The name means 'port of the Salmon' it was used as a Salmon fishery, fish were caught by coastal netting. It has a small church dedicated to St. Gobban (privately owned) is said to be the smallest in Ireland, but the remains of an even smaller one (St. Lasseraghs) stands on the cliff above.
