( Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved ) This Cincinnati - Northern Kentucky landmark is more famous than most people realize. Construction that began in 1856, was delayed by financial troubles and the Civil War. It was the 1st bridge connecting Cincinnati to Covington when it opened on New Year's Day in 1867. At a span over the river of 1057 feet, it was the world's longest suspension bridge. John A. Roebling's bridge was also the prototype for the Brooklyn Bridge. As a boy we called it The Singing Bridge because of the noise made by car tires running on the steel deck. Today, some people call it Roebling's Bridge, but most just call it ... The Suspension Bridge.
