Description
I say now that I don’t know how to reveal the Emes (truth) in art. Thus if I paint (try to paint—as I don’t, as I say, know how) this thought (that I don’t know how to reveal the emes in art) behold I have painted the emes, I have found the emes. In this way I can proceed through the painting. I avoid sheker. That is, I follow, or try to follow, my thoughts as I proceed. I try to maintain to the greatest possible extent a handle on thoughts the underlie the lines and colors that are being reveled in the work. To avoid fooling myself; this is enough of a challenge for a human being. Yet if one doesn't have some handle on this, in my opinion, he shouldn't take art-making too seriously.
If the artist will look honestly at what he does he will see that his fundamental involvement is the revelation of himself to himself. It is true that he is also reveling wider truths than his own personal sphere, but would it be that he understood the personal truths that are being revealed! He must learn to 'read' what he is revealing in his process of creating. The more that he can read correctly his emerging creation, the more he has elevated art from the realm of illusion and delusion into the realm of truth. Ultimately art-work can become a work of Torah, of truth, a vessel of Divine light which illuminates all the worlds.
