It has not been quite clear as to how the origins of Thoth began.
Some texts state he is the son of Ra, others state he created himself and still others say that he was the word and the breath of Ptah and the power and magic of that breath and word (language) that creates. His attributes have been: the inventor of writing, of magic and its alchemical essence that comes with healing, as well as a record keeper and mediator. His most popular contemporary identity is the messenger of the gods in which was given his name "Hermes" by the Greeks. A counselor of great men and gods, yet his advise is always of an unexpected nature. He is also the intervening counselor within the underworld; for it is he who helps the souls of the dead to reflect and review their hearts before it is weighed against the feather of Maat/truth.
