Thames, Wa - New Zealand

yep he has that look. Could have had a worse outcome( especially if it was the roar), looking at those antlers, so pleased you ok. Arent they just magnificent animals. They farm them here (NZ) for the venison along with the wapiti and fallow dear. They also cull them from our forests which is unfortunate but necessary as they damage alot of native flora and fauna. Interesting attempt at camoflage. such a great shot v/f

Pete, Fantastic wildlife photo love the stance of this remarkable looking animal and the foreground is beautifully detailed along with the water in back of this Stag. Great job at adding a small blur to the background to concentrate fully on the deer. Enjoyed the story line in the description box very well put together. Plus I can relate to your opening paragraph as I have put myself in harms way a couple of times just trying to get the best photo of animal or hanging off something to capture the right angle of a scenic shot. Fantastic photo of this gorgeous animal, voted, Tweet, Google and FB promoted

What I've noticed when dealing with wildlife, is, the subtle sounding to us, motorized zoom, & focusing mechanisms of the camera is loud, startling, & annoying to wildlife. Then the flash makes them go ballistic.

Big antlers Pete. The stag too! Yikes!! Glad you're not impaled. Read your sidebar with fascination. There was a decline in elk populations in Canada a few years back. The hunters reported that the wolves were the biggest contributor to the problem. The Canadian government ordered a study as governments will do. The results: The biggest factor in the decimation of the herds was hunting. This is a superb picture, acquired at great personal risk. I applaud you and your picture. vote 9, favorite

Description

I got a bit too close to this guy, my EXIF data shows that I was actually 5.5m away from this stag. About five seconds after I took this shot he decided to wipe my camera gear out, missing me by inches!

The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the largest deer species. The red deer inhabits most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, parts of western Asia, and central Asia. It also inhabits the Atlas Mountains region between Morocco and Tunisia in northwestern Africa, being the only species of deer to inhabit Africa. Red deer have been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. In many parts of the world, the meat (venison) from red deer is used as a food source.

Red deer are ruminants, characterized by an even number of toes, and a four-chambered stomach. Genetic evidence indicates the red deer (Cervus elaphus) as traditionally defined is a species group rather than a single species, although it remains disputed as to exactly how many species the group includes.[2][3] The slightly larger wapiti (elk in American English), native to North America and eastern parts of Asia represents a distinct species besides red deer. The ancestor of all red deer, including wapiti, probably originated in central Asia and probably resembled sika deer.[4] I

Although at one time red deer were rare in some areas, they were never close to extinction. Reintroduction and conservation efforts, especially in the United Kingdom, have resulted in an increase of red deer populations, while other areas, such as North Africa, have continued to show a population decline.
