Total Lunar Eclipse
Stephen & Donna O'Meara
Photograph - Photograph
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon passes through the dark umbra of the Earth's shadow. This image shows the fully eclipsed moon at mid-totality. The colors are a result of sunlight being refracted into the Earth's shadow by the Earth's atmosphere. The color and brightness of the moon in eclipse depends on how much light is refracted into the shadow by the Earth's atmosphere.
