Description
The distinction of male and female Monarchs is actually quite easy, females generally have thicker veins on their wings whereas males have thinner veins with large black spots (androconium) located on the hind wings.
Monarch butterflies are among the most common and largest of the butterfly species, they are one of few insects that are capable of traveling cross Atlantic. They are also poisonous, if eaten by an animal it will get sick (not to the point of killing it but certainly enough to remind it to not make the mistake of eating another monarch).
