Trending Into Maine - Coaster's Meeting
Painting - Acrylic, Pen & Ink On Stretched Canvas
Two Coasting schooners passing off Thatchers Island's Twin Lights in Rockport, Ma. The Alice S. Wentworth is in the foreground bound wung-out from Gloucester to Boothbay with a load of salt. When a coaster sailed with the wind astern and the mainsail to one side and the foresail to theother she was said to be wung-out or sailing wing and wing.
Off her port bow is seen s Granite Schooner, perhaps the Ervin J. Luce heavily burdened with a load of Granite from Rockport to Boston. This was a common sight off Cape Ann in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
