West African trypanosomiasis, also called Gambian sleeping sickness, is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei gambiense shown in this light micrograph. Trypanosoma is a blood bourne pathogen transmitted amongst humans via bites from tsetse flies. There are no known vaccines nor cures for sleeping sickness.
