Description
This path leads to the top of Turtle Mound, just south of New Smyrna Beach on the East Coast of Florida. This mound has been built up by humans since prehistoric times. Natives there placed empty oysters shells and fish bones there, and the accumulation of the bony material, called midden, over the many years grew to more than 50 feet high. This is similar to the handling of current day refuse which is collected at inland mounds called landfills.
The mounds became landmarks to fishermen in the small kayaks and canoes by the early natives in Eastern Florida. They also served as lookout towers for later Indian Tribes, and to Spanish Explorers during the European discover of America.
Today, these mounds are protected by the National Parks Service, which provided this wonderful trails to the top, where you can get the same view as those explorers.
