Caught in mid air, this Rufous Hummingbird, twists away from the feeder as he hears the shutter click. The startled bird returned a few seconds later, getting use to the shutter noise.
The Rufous hummingbird is very common during the summer in Colorado. It migrates between the western part of the United States and Mexico and Central America during the winter. While in Colorado they will build nests, lay eggs and have a family. They survive eating small insects, drinking the nectar from plants and also enjoying the liquid provided from feeders. The consume half their weight in sugar each day.
Hummingbirds are the smallest bird in the world, they flap their wings 60 to 200 times per second. They are the only bird that can fly backwards and they can fly 60 miles per hour. They have an average lifespan of 5-6 years while living in the wild.
