Mixografía® is pleased to announce the release of a new print edition, Untitled, 2006, by Cuban-born American artist Jorge Pardo, for immediate public viewing in the gallery.
Pardo emerged in the 1990’s with works that traversed the fields of painting, sculpture, interior design, and architecture. To this notion, he occasionally acted as a curator and became concerned with the environment an exhibit creates and how it affects the viewers’ experience. Informed by this role, Pardo began to create works of art that question the very nature of their existence, create a dialogue with the exhibition space, and intersect the architecture they occupy.
Pardo subscribes to the conviction that aesthetic pleasure is crucial to the reception of any work of art. Creating conceptually grounded objects, he provokes in his defiance of the depreciated value of pleasantness.
The new edition made in collaboration with the Mixografía® Workshop, Untitled, 2006, an undulating deep relief diptych print on handmade paper burnished in 22k gold leaf and incorporating light from within, is nothing short of pleasant. In Untitled, 2006, Pardo once again showcases an elegant coupling of the aesthetic and the utilitarian. Inspired by an earlier Mixografía® print armored in gold by Mathias Goeritz, Mensaje, 1982, the beauty of this edition is very specific; it is gilded, not glitzy.
Perhaps due to its ability to define an exhibition space, Pardo has infused many of his works with light. As a utilitarian wall sculpture, this edition illuminates the room and adds a new dimension to the space. As an art object, it raises questions about the effect of its own perception. Lending to this concept, the medium alters the viewers’ experience of the piece; a gilded surface in deep relief, self-lit by LED’s. It is not the conditioned image that ‘print on paper’ usually conjures.
