The extension of University Avenue south of Queen street was originally planned to include a traffic circle at Richmond Street, centered on a Vimy war monument. The onset of the great depression in 1929 led to the cacellation of the circle and various other grand plans for new streets throughout the city. The view depicted would have been south from Queen Street.
