Vo96 Circuit 5
Digital Art - Digital
These images capture the interconnections of the Core-96 brain of the Vo-96 Acoustic Synthesizer. They are not computer generated and nothing is random. You are looking at the culmination of thousands of hours of careful focus.
I create my circuit layouts by hand using the computer as a sophisticated drawing device. When I do this work, I manually determine the placement of every component and the routing of every trace in precise detail. This artwork represents hundreds of hours working directly on the image, but that's just the last leg of it.
The logic of the interconnections is translated here into visible circuitry resulting in a unique image -- and this underlying logic is the culmination of thousands of hours of my work dating back to 1979. Had I at any time during the development on this invention made different choices about the electronics, the image you see would be different in the same measure. That's all in here, somehow.
I have a confession to make: I work these images far past the point at which the basic electrical behavior would be satisfied. I'm a musician and like many musicians I also have an artistic eye. So I'm compelled to arrange things pleasingly, to respect and echo local symmetries, to try to make the form of the electronics beautiful. I can't seem to stop until it no longer offends my eye.
Normally, you'd never see these images as they are locked away inside of the Vo-96 device. My friend and associate Chris Stack has helped me here to render these circuits as artworks to be presented and hopefully enjoyed as art -- something I'd never expected to happen while I was creating them. We are very pleased to offer them here for everyone to enjoy, and perhaps somehow to see the journey captured within.
