As a precursor to learning how to oil paint I started with oil pastels and used a bit of Turpenoid to blend the colors. That worked well enough, so painting seemed the next logical step. These oils are actually the water-soluble oils. Best of both worlds - they are designed to be used with water as your solvent and clean up easily with soap and water, but if desired they can be mixed with conventional oils, but you lose the initial benefits - one of which is the water-soluble oils dry faster.
