Thank you Jeff, Anne-Elizabeth and AR for your comments and congratulations. The adding of the names to the "dog" tags, really makes one look at this subject with totally different eyes. There are so many who still are not aware of the sacrifice that the war dogs (and their handlers) make.

Thank you, Bob and Nancy. Yes, it's a story that a lot of people don't know. And it is amazing to see the reactions of the people when they see the display. The guy who does the display at Melbourne each year has scaled it back a little now but he still puts out many of the plaques of the dogs names, the bucket set up and a few other things. He is working on setting up a memorial on the dogs. As soon as I get that information from him, I'll probably be doing a special promotion and blog on it to help him raise funds. Thanks for the V/F!

Carolyn...was your husband in the Security Police by any chance? I wasn't a handler, but I was an SP at DaNang 66-67.

Carolyn Marshall replied:

Yes, he was! He was Air Force Security Police, K-9 70-71. He was all over the place in Vietnam and Thailand.

Harriman, TN - United States

This really makes one stop and think...don't it!? So touching!

Carolyn Marshall replied:

Yes, it certainly does. Some people would come by the display and just stand and stare. You just have to let it soak in to understand the sacrifice.

Thank you, Mel. As I have said in other posts, most people really do not understand how many there were that were killed. You can say a number - there were 4,000 dogs killed - but when you see all these plaques, it really hits home.

Thank you buyer in Monroe, MI.

Thank you Wanda and Valia. Yes, it is pretty incredible to see. Most people don't realize how many dogs died in serving our country. People who visit the Vietnam Wall say they never realized how many people were killed there until they saw all the names on the Wall. This display does the same thing. The photo here doesn't really give the impact that seeing it in person does. Thank you for your comments.

ANNAPOLIS, MA - United States

Thank you and your dogs for your service, Mel! This is an incredible display at the Melbourne, FL, reunion. If you ever get a chance, you should go. Actually, I encourage ANY veteran of any war or conflict to go. It is an amazing week-long experience beginning with the Wall coming in through the closing ceremony. This particular display started out with only a table, some photos and books, and a few guys telling their stories and sharing with others. It has grown to this tremendous labor of love that you see in this image over the last couple of years. It is my honor to share.

Crestview Hills, KY - United States

Truly a great tribute to all of our mostly forgotten K-9 soldiers during that war. It's really great that this is being done every year, I did not know. I had two dogs during my tour and both remained only to be euthanized later on. Thanks for displaying this here and telling their story !

Tampa, FL - United States

Thank you, Valerie, for the feature. These guys deserve all the attention they can get.

Tampa, FL - United States

It is really shocking how many died. I had no idea. This photo really brings it home.

Tampa, FL - United States

Most people don't realize how many dogs have been lost in wars. War dogs go a long way back, and they're still serving in many capacities today.

Tampa, FL - United States

This is amazing, Carolyn.

Tampa, FL - United States

Thank you, Diannah. This memorial is put up every year at a Vietnam and All Veterans reunion held in Melbourne, FL every year. There is always a group of dog handlers around and the emotions run deep.
