Description
Wasp tongue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tongue (red) of a wasp. Unlike the equivalent structure in bees (the proboscis) the wasp has a short tongue that is used for licking not sucking. There are feelers attached on each side. Other structures partially seen here are the mandibles (grey, across top) and maxillary palps (left and right, yellow). Magnification x35 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
