Description
This is one of the photos which is the inspiration behind the batik painting Grizzlies on Wapiti Creek. It was an unforgettable adventure. We came back to camp after dark one evening and a black bear ran in front of us and then we heard a cub bawling off in the draw to our right. In the light of the moon, we could make out a lot of movement, what appeared to be 4 bears. At first light, we returned and were shocked to see 4 grizzly bears!
We figured the bawling must have been the sow running the black bear off. We watched them at a safe distance. The young were sub adults, almost as big as the sow. As we watched we could see they were feeding on an elk that was partially submerged in Wapiti Creek. There are stories behind all of my art and this one was unforgettable!

Thank you Anne! They sure do and they are a reminder to me of the experience itself. If I shut my eyes, I can smell the sage and hear the cub bawling.

Thank you Mia for featuring these bears in your Big Sky of Art group. This memorable event is just one of the reasons that Montana is an amazing place.
