Waves attack protective boulders and pilings below waterfront shops at Cannery Row in Monterey, California. Diners at the upper left of the photo are either unperturbed or unaware of the action below the restaurant...... Monterey is at the southern part of Monterey Bay on the Pacific Ocean in central California. Remains of a few buildings that housed the renowned early 20th century sardine industry are scattered along the shoreline here. In the 1940s, John Steinbeck's best-selling novel "Cannery Row" made the area even more famous. Today, Cannery Row is a street well-known to international tourists for its shops, restaurants, seaside hotels and the Monterey Bay Aquarium......A profusion of birds and marine life populates the land and waters around Monterey, attracting tourists from around the world. The bay is designated as the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and encompasses more than 6,000 square miles.
